Harvest Monday

This weeks Harvest Monday has a little more variety. Still waiting for all the summer goodies though like tomatoes, peppers & cucumbers. Here are some shots of mostly everything that was harvested:

More mixed peas. I picked the vines clean today so next week I am not expecting any. The snow peas are setting blooms now but the rest are not. The next few days are cooling down finally so hopefully they will set some more blooms.

The bean harvest has picked up a little more too. Two handfuls of dragon tongue beans this time. To the side are the first pole beans of the season, kentucky blue & purple podded. Pretty slim pickings of them but lots are setting now.

I had a few comments about the dragon tongue beans last time. I have grown them for three seasons now and they are excellent. They keep a very nice texture when cooked, almost meaty. They also produce early and are very productive over the season.

Here is some of the Black Seeded Simpson lettuce that was harvested. The seed for this was shared by Alex.

Last but not least the first broccoli of the season. The variety is Waltham and I am not totally impressed with it. The plants are spindly and this bunch is from three plants. I will not be growing this variety again, my Green Goliath last year was much better.

  1. I don't know Dan...I think that broccoli looks pretty tasty to me.

My Dragon's Tongue Beans are just starting to flower. Glad to see you like them.

  3. The broccoli does look good. Mine were very small this year due to the heat.

I've never tried the dragon tongue beans...they are pretty. Looks like a good variety to try

  4. Thomas - It was tasty broccoli. The plants are weaklings though.

Laura - It is one big head and two small heads. The peas have been excellent this year, hopefully I get a second flush before the heat sets in.

Robin - The dragon tongue beans are worth trying, it's my favorite bean.

  6. I'm glad to find out it's the variety of the broccoli, not the grower of the broccoli that makes Waltham under perform. The Calabrese and De Cicco are doing much better for me, but the plants are huge, while the broccoli heads aren't that impressive. I'd like to find a compact variety that still gives a decent harvest.

  8. Waltham is the only kind I've ever grown. I get heads, but not much larger than my spread out hand.

Loving the beans, Dan. Thanks for suggesting them and the tomatoes!

  9. Is Dragon's Tongue a pole bean variety?

The broccoli may not be as good a producer as Green Goliath for you but it looks very tasty! I have my first heads forming on Premium Crop and I am waiting to see if it is a better producer than the Umpqua variety I have been growing for several years now.

  10. Hi Dan, I followed over from Daphne's link. Those dragon tongue beans are really stunning looking. Do the beans have the same coloring as the pods? I wouldn't complain if I got any broccoli that looked like yours, but I guess my standards as a new gardener are much lower than yours. :) I'm really impressed with how your built your garden on a slope. I'll be following your blog!

  11. I grew Waltham this year too because of it's compact nature, and didn't like it very much. A lot of side shoots, not a very large main head.

The dragon tongue is gorgeous. Keeping that one in mind for when I have real space to grow...

  12. Dragon tongue beans are very common here, I like them. That purple bean has very interesting color, are the beans inside the same color?

  13. Three small heads are better than none ! Waltham is doing nothing for me at all (same as last year). It's tall and unkeen to produce a head. Yesterday, I noticed a tiny button on my Ramoso, tho. (yay !)

Beans are looking great ! Didn't start mine indoors after all, direct seeded instead so not expecting a harvest anytime soon.

    Nice harvest !

  15. Personally I'd be happy with any broccoli harvest. All I've had were one tiny head so far and one tiny side shoot - from six plants. I always do better in the fall, but my spring broccoli just won't grow.

  16. It is disappointing when you try something new and it doesn't work out well, but the broccoli you got looks great anyway.

I'm amazed at how far along your beans are, what a nice treat at this time of year.
