Today was kind of exciting, There was a
5.0 earthquake about 6hrs north of Brantford. I was upstairs doing some renovating and the floor started bouncing. This house is quite old which just added to the bounce with its sunken floors. I thought the floor was going to cave in. No damage thankfully but the shelves fell out of a bookcase. Crazy!
After I caught my breath I planted some fall crops.... Above are 9 'early dividend' broccoli and 3 purple sprouting broccoli. Last year I started all the fall broccoli on June 1st so I am a little late this year. The summer is reported to be a hot one so the late start will probably be beneficial.
I also order a few things to plant this fall and they arrived the other day. Here is what came from Johnny's for fall planting:
- red pac choi
- bonsai pac choi (mini green variety)
- happy rich broccoli (asian sprouting variety)
I also picked up a few other things:
- Anuenue Summer Crisp Lettuce (for a summer planting)
- Savor F1 Charentais Melons (for next year)
- NuMex Joe E Parker Peppers, Anaheim type (for next year)
- Sugar Snap Pea (for next year)

Isn't that what everyone does after an earthquake shake... plant something!? LOL!

We heard about the earthquake on the news. Scary!

Rock and roll baby! 5.0 is a pretty good sized quake. Actually, I have a link on my blog to the USGS earthquake list for California because every so often we get one big enough to notice and I'm always curious to know where the darn thing was centered. They've got links there to all sorts of earthquake information around the world. I'm happy to hear that you and your old house got through ok.

We had one close here in GA, actually, about 10 years ago. It was rather nifty once we figured out what it was.

I can't begin to imagine taking an earthquake quite so easily in my stride as you do!
ReplyDeleteWe felt it too ! I was outside when it happened. It was quite cool actually ! Quakes are relatively frequent here. I'm roughly 30 minutes away from Mont-Tremblant. They don't call it "Mount Shaky" (literally) for nothin' ! (We also got a 3.9 back in February).

Parts of northeast Maine felt that quake, it was indeed a big one! Glad you are ok.
ReplyDeleteYikes, need to get my act together on the fall veggies. I like the sound of the Red Pac Choi, I may have to make a visit to Johnny's. Next week I am going to tour Johnny's research farm, can't wait!
Hi Dan, sorry! I haven't checked that email in quite some time but will do so tonight! I just ordered a few things from Johnny's as well. I don't know about you but I'm actually getting excited about the fall and winter growing season.

ReplyDeleteYour broccoli should do fine. I'm always late planting Winter stuff like broccoli and leeks.. but they usually catch up anyway!

ReplyDeleteAs a quake "veteran" in Southern California, I know the feeling. On the plus side, a little shaking is good for those tomato blossoms!
ReplyDeleteThere was lots of loud shaking up here and some new cracks in a load bearing wall of our house. As for fall crops, I agree, great time to plant.
ReplyDeleteI didn't feel the earthquake here in Maine, but some did. I remember experiencing a 4.0 earthquake when I lived in NH, I thought someone drove into the building I was in. It was a strange experience. We are not used to this sort of thing and nothing is built to withstand it.
