The hot peppers are just starting to pop up tonight. It seems all the seeds sprout at night, has anyone else experienced this?
These Big Chilli II peppers took 6 days to germinate. They are an Anaheim chili that grows to 10in long & 2.5in wide so they should live up to their name. They are destine for salsa, green chili sauce, red chili sauce and homemade chili powder. They better do well as their faith is already sealed! I'm still waiting on my other chili seed in the mail.......

Dan, I haven't noticed if mine emerge from the soil at night, or not. Salsa sounds good right now, we just finished off a jar yesterday. Man, it was good!

No matter how many times it happens, I never get over the tingly feeling germinating seeds give me! Is this a gardener wide thing or just a crazy gardener thing? Hang on, most gardeners are crazy, or a variation of not quite sane anyway. Good to see the peppers are on their way!
ReplyDeleteI'm just now planting my peppers & tomatoes indoors (I'm a little late because of the mission trip)......it'll be interesting to compare our plants growing in different climates. Pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteExciting! It's hard to believe that those little seedlings will grow into huge plants...seeds never cease to amaze.
ReplyDeleteI often find that seedlings seem to pop up during the night rather than the day.
ReplyDelete6 days is pretty good. My Bhut Jolokia took 10-11 days to pop. I thought I got duds. Hope they turn out well for you.
ReplyDeleteI've never noticed that. Now I'm going to have to check.
ReplyDeleteYes, mine seem to pop up at night, too. My tomatoes were non-existent one day and over an inch tall the next morning! Congrats on the new hot pepper babies.
ReplyDeleteThe garden blog community seems to be waking from their winter nap...spring must be near ;-)
My onions are starting to germinate, I can't wait. I need to get the rest of my lights set up and start everything else. This is always such a fun time of year.
ReplyDeleteThere is a saying I have always heard from my grandmother, "A watched pot never boils". I think the same goes for seeds. A watched seed will never sprout! They do seem to pop up over night....
ReplyDeleteHmm.. I don't think I've noticed night time sprouting. I'm going to be on the look out now.
ReplyDeleteEG - This will be my first try at preserving salsa, I can't wait.
ReplyDeletePrue - It really never gets old growing seeds at least for me. I can't speak for other gardeners but I can conclude that I am a crazy gardener.
Conservative Gardener - It will be interesting to compare how the seedlings do in different climates. Mine will be planted out much later then yours, the early tomatoes will go out late April and the peppers will go out late May.
Parsec - They really are amazing little things.
UKBob - Thanks for the input on the seed germination. Nice blog too!
Red - Peppers can take a long time to germinate. I think the heat mat is what got them sprouting so fast, they really like the heat. I have read of those Bhut Jolokia, they are supposed to be really hot.
Daphne - Let me know of your findings, it will be interesting to know how often things germinate over night.
Granny - It does seem people are coming out of hibernation lately. Spring is in the air.
Chiot's Run - It is a fun time of year. The next things I have to start is the brassica's and then the rest of the warm season crops some time near the end of march.
Skeeter - I think that saying is true. I try not to watch to much or I start poking around to see if they have sprouted, not really the best thing to do.
Ottawa Gardener - Please do and let me know what your findings are.
They are so cute. I love to see the first signs of life
ReplyDeleteCity Garden - Isn't it fun watching them sprout, it makes winter bearable.
