Harvest Monday, Winter Version

Our forecasted thaw arrived the last few days which got me out in the garden a bit. It has not been all gumballs and pixie sticks however, it has been rather grey and insipid out. Sunday I headed out into the cool fog with my snips to see what I could find for Harvest Monday. Pictured above is what I managed to find amongst the poor half frozen veggies.

Mizuna

Bright Lights Chard

Mache

Spinach

Little Gem Romaine

Green Onion Tops

Almost looks like spring has sprung! My experience so far with winter veg is that from a distance they look quite awful and certainly not appetizing. But with a close look and selective harvesting there is lots of fresh, unscaved veg to be had. I noticed the plants have been putting on some new growth. I am hoping once the sun gets strong late feb maybe I will have more to pick from.

  1. You nailed it! Over wintered veggies may not look all that wonderful in the patch - but there is plenty of good pickings if one ignores altogether or removes the damaged portions. Your harvest looks like the makings of a great fresh salad.

  2. Wow, all those yummy greens in the middle of Winter, I am impressed! I think your harvest is bigger than mine.

  3. That's quite an impressive plate Dan! This is the skill of growing stuff to eat 12 months of the year! Actually stuff on the ground has been protected by the snow to some degree.

  4. That's a lovely looking plate of greens (and reds and yellows!) Late winter always looks desperate but early spring will give a new kick to the over-wintered veg. You really appreciate it then.

  7. Hey Dan, nice harvest. I wish I had some scallions right about now. How did the lettuce taste. Mine looks great but tastes awful! I can't wait to grow mizuna this year as well.

  11. Wow, I'm amazed at what survives the cold. Your hard work is really paying off. Enjoy every bite!

  12. This is my experience too. I also notice that the ones in the middle of the coldframe are happier (generally) than the ones at the sides from which the frost creeps inward. I just picked up some bright lights chard. I've been growing Fordhook Giant which has overwintered and self sown up here but I LOVE the looks of rainbow one.
