Spring Already?

The weather topped out at 16c(60f), with sun & wind this afternoon. So I headed out into the garden to get some work done and soak up some vitamin D. First thing I did was check the cold frame and too my surprise the romaine lettuce is germinating. I then looked at the mixed greens pot and saw one sprout but nothing yet from the scallions. At this rate I may be harvesting baby greens by April, or it may all freeze, who knows.

I then raked out the lawn to remove loads of twigs from the trees, leaves and thatch. The pile was placed in a brown paper bag and will be picked up by the city for composting. I would compost it myself but with the bag being half twigs it would take a while in my composter. Exciting topic I know...

As you can see everything is still very brown and the perennial borders still have their winter covering of leaves. Given a little time the lawn will green up and the perennials will be ready for another year of growth. You may also notice that my fence on the far right is still not finish, I will have to get to that very soon.

I then got out the long lens and took a couple shots of the woodpeckers on the feeders I built. We have alot of woodpeckers in our yard which I had not notice before. I had seen then often enough but never noticed the six or so that frequent the yard previous to putting out the feeder.

This guy was enjoying the warm breeze as much as I was.

Good to the last drop, looks like I need to refill the feeder tonight.

  1. Great shot of the woodpecker!

Glad to see that your Romaine is coming up; can't wait to get my seeds and plant them in the ground later this month.
It must be pretty warm under the frame. Have you taken the temperature?

  3. Sally - On the shady side the temperature is at 5-15c (41-59f) and then if the thermometer is in the sun it has gotten up to 30c(86f). Pretty good results. I just hope the weather doesn't get really cold again or it would probably kill the little seedlings.

Daphne - I was surprised to see them so soon, I hope it stays warm so they grow fast.

  5. You'll have lettuce before you know it :-)

Ah the woodpeckers... nice pic! I heard one just today while I was walking in the garden. We have alot of wooded land around us and this guy was pecking away at what sounded to be a dead/hollow tree.

  11. I am glad you are having nicer temps up there! Was 78 here today, not the 80 they were calling for but close enough! We had a blast in the yard but oh so sore now from all the play...
