My photograph made news

I sent in one of my Bald Eagle photograph's to Global News in Toronto and on March 12 they put it on the news. It was pretty exciting. The image below is the photograph they aired and below that is a video clip of it. My photo is about 30 seconds into the video.

I also took the two shots below on the same day, Feb 28th. I have been photographing the eagles up river from the nest when they feed in the morning. I am unable to get any more photos of the nest because the Ministry of Natural Resources has since closed the trail. I think it is a really good idea and I will stay out of the area to let them nest.

  1. That is a nice photo. Supposedly they have moved into our area recently. I haven't seen them though.

  5. Dan,
Great shots. How far away were you? Every May we go camping on the Connecticut River in Massachusetts and there's a bald eagle nest, but it's on a small island and there's a barrier around it.

  7. As they would say back in my home town of Montague, Mass.....wicked cool!

So what kind of equipment are you using? I've got a Cannon 20D with a few Cannon lenses.

  8. Daphne - Their numbers have really increased lately. It seems you can find them anywhere with clean water & a good fish population.

Sandy, EG, Tina, Prue - Thanks!

Sally - I was about 300 feet form this one. The nest here is on an island as well, in the middle of the grand river.

Dennis - The household camera is a Nikon D40 and our long lens is 75-300mm with vibration reduction. I really don't like to whole sharing part so I will be getting a Canon xsi soon and will later add a 300mm IS f/4 lens and a 1.4x converter making it 420mm. That will be the perfect wildlife setup in my opinion.

  9. Very nice.....now you're talking my language! But can you use Nikon equipment with a Canon camera? My 3 main lenses are: 70-200mm IS USM f/2.8 (I have a 2x converter to make it 400mm), a 24-70 f/2.8 L USM which is my main, everyday lens & a 10-22mm f3.5/4.5 USM wide lens.

  10. No I can't interchange nikon & canon lenses. The problem with Nikon is they only sell high end long lenses so a 300mm f2.8 with VR is $5000. Canon offers the 300mm f4 IS that you can easily find used for about $800. That's my main reason for wanting a canon as well as their camera's have better features for less money.

The 70-200mm is a nice lens, does it auto focus fast with the 2x converter?

  12. Beautiful pic Dan! Now you're just as famous as I was with my silly potato bins. hehe. I haven't seen an eagle that close in ages. Jealous!

  13. DoubleD- Thanks for the complement.

Sinfonian - We are quite famous aren't we, lol. Being on the west coast it must not be to difficult to find a baldy.

  14. Dan- ummmmmm..I wouldn't use the word fast..lol! It's pretty slow with the converter. It doesn't exactly focus real quick to begin with. But it's a great lens. I bought it back when I had a couple bucks.......I couldn't afford to buy it now.....I've actually thought about selling it. But not yet!

  15. Dennis - That lens would have certainly consumed a bit of coin. That's the problem with our 70-300mm, it is just not fast enough in terms of f stop & focus. Ours isn't a prime lens like your so it would be even slower. The 300mm are supposed to be pretty fast and great for action shots. They are the size of a canon though.

  17. That is so exciting Dan! Did you win anything for the picture? They had a contest down here for Fall colors and one of my pics was chosen and shown on TV during the weather forecast as well. We missed the TV viewing as it was on the evening news and not the late news we watched. Sigh, but I also received two Family passes for all GA state parks as a bonus…

It is best to let the Eagles be while nesting so I am glad they shut down the trail. They need their peace to thrive now...

Congrats on the pic on TV, I know how exciting that is for you...

  18. Fantastic pictures!

I feel that, even if the bald eagle were not our national symbol, they are magnificent birds. I am blessed to have a nesting pair within a few miles of my house so we see them regularly.

  19. skeeter - They do send t-shirts but I didn't send my address so I don't think I will get one. That is cool that one of your photo's was shown on the news as well. Happy Birthday by the way.

Mathew - They are great to see. Glade you liked my photographs.
