Peas Planted!

It would appear that spring might finally be starting. We have been pretty much snow free for 3 weeks now but the temperature has been rather cold for March. The days ahead will be sunny and 4-8c (39-46f) so I planted up my peas. I started 20 peat pots, 3 seeds in each (old seed) and I will hopefully thin to 2 plants per pot. I am germinating them in the coldframe and they will be planted out in 2-4 weeks, pot and all. This year I am only growing snap peas with the particular variety being Sugar Sprint. I really prefer snaps as the harvest is at least twice as much compared to shelling peas.

  1. I with you, I only grow snap and snow peas, there's not enough room in the garden for shelling peas. Plus, I think snap peas are tastier. Good luck with the weather.

  2. I want to get my peas planted too, but directly seeded in the ground. Yesterday the ground had a little frost on one spot (where we shoveled the snow from our driveway). I'm hoping it will all be melted today and I can get to it.

  3. That's what I'm doing this year also....snap peas all the way!

  5. Lucky you - we have snow here again lingering on from last week's fall.

  6. Peas are the perfect vegetable to grow as it grows quickly and don’t need much attention. They do need full sunlight and the soil needs to be kept moist. Peas prefer cool conditions, so plant them early in the season.

  7. I too grow only snap peas. I am able to plant mine in February. I plant Cascadia. They are great in the pods, or I let some grow for shelling peas. They are so productive, we can never eat them all and I share with the neighbors! This is only from a bed 2 x 8 with 2 rows. They are just starting to climb this week, and once that starts they take off!
(Taste the leaves, they taste exactly like peas! Kids are really surprised!)

  8. It's great to see a successful veggie urban garden. You have a lot packed in there.

This year everything was slow to start with quite hard frosts till nearly the end of may. Nothing wanted to grow and I live in the SW so that is usually fairly mild.
