Garlic Planted!

Fall has arrived so it is garlic time again. This year I am planting at the proper time as appose to last year when I planted in late December, tis tis. I decided to finally give in and order some interesting varieties. It can be kind of expensive to order garlic so normally I would just replanted from the current years crop.

The bed was cleared, turned and amended with my black gold. Then to speed things along I just jabbed in a trowel and stuck the clove in the hole. I am too lazy to dig a trench this year! I put in 6 varieties this year which I will show below. Then the remaining area was planted with my standby variety that has monster sized cloves.

To my surprise Wildfire looks like it might be the best of the bunch. It has two huge cloves per head and is suppose to be really hot. Can't wait for next summer when I can give them a try. If you're interested all the garlic came from Boundary Garlic Farm which has a great selection of organic garlic. I believe they only ship within Canada and you have to order in August, they sell out quickly.

  1. The only problem with two huge cloves is that you need half your crop to replant the next year. I have one that used to give me four and I hated giving up a quarter of the crop every year, but I did. Now it seems to be giving me six cloves which I like.

    1. Daphne, that is true. I am hoping they make a few more then two cloves next year or I'll only be able to try one head...

  2. Your Wildfire does look awfully promising. Have you tried Susan Delafield? It's really good also. Boundary Farm seems the best organic place in Canada to purchase from. Annapolis Seeds here in Nova Scotia have some available also, I think. Will look forward to your update at harvest time.

  3. Nice to see you back blogging. Thanks for stopping by mine, too. What has kept you away so much? Not gardening?

    1. My photography has been consuming me for the last couple of years. I am still tending the vegetables but the blog part seems to be getting neglected.

  4. We grew a range of varieties last year - about 9 of them - one was Chesnok which didn't do very well for us so I'll be interested to see how yours fares. I've planted our outdoor ones but still have some to plant in tubs.

    1. It will be interesting to see how they all do next year. I imagine they should all do well with my southern exposure and our usually dry summer.

  5. I haven't seen any of those varieties in the UK... I'll be interested to hear how they perform. I never dig a trench for my garlic - I just make sure I measure the space between them so if they die down before I get a chance to harvest them, I know where to find them.

  8. I see a theme there. You like red garlics. They are indeed beautiful. I planted Ajo Rojo this year, which is streaked with red, as well as Early Italian, California Early, and Sonoran. I have 40 cloves in the ground so far, with more to go. Only so much time in the day/week/etc.

  9. My garden space is too limited to be able to tie things up with a longer growing crop. But from your comments about the fresh level quality, I may have to rethink.

  10. Interesting varieties, most of ours come from the Isle of Wight so have the name 'Wight' somewhere in there. I no recognise the Chesnok variety though.

  12. Garlic is great! I've never seen so many different ones. I think, when I have a yard of my own, then the #1 thing I want to grow is green onions. Love those.

  13. I love the burgundy and the Chesnok Red. I only just planted garlic for the first time last fall. I have no idea of the cultivars.
