Warm Season Crop Catch-Up

Tonight I am doing a catch up post on all the warm season crops I have planted. Most veggies in this post went in during the first week of June. This is about 2 weeks later then normal but this was unavoidable with our cool start to spring. The good news is out temps are hovering around normal now so the warm season crops should be pleased.

Burgundy Okra, grown from seed shared by EG . I planted a couple of these in a big hanging basket for some added heat. They are kind of limping along at the moment. They should get growing once they root in and our warm summer weather arrives.

These are Blue Lake Pole Beans. They were direct sown under a A frame bamboo trellis. Can't wait for fresh green beans!

Here we have Dragon Tongue beans that were grown as starts in rootrainers. These are my favorite bush bean, so tasty! They produce a pretty good dry beans too.

This wee thing is a Numex Joe E Parker Pepper which is an Anaheim Pepper. I planted 9 in my smallest raised bed.

This pepper is a Sport Pepper, like the pickled ones on Chicago style hotdogs. If they grow well in this hanging basket I'll pickle them this fall.

I am growing two Parthenocarpic cucumbers this year. They only produce female flowers and are seedless. Because they don't need cross pollination they are suppose to be more productive. This particular plant is Rocky F1 (Persian/Greenhouse type) and the other variety I am trying is Adam Gherkin F1 (European Pickling). Both will be trained on a trellis.

These are Montreal Market Melons. A Canadian heirloom that was world renowned in its day. They will also be grown on a trellis.

Last but not least, one of the Tomatoes. I have Tomatoes all over the place including 3 parts of the garden, 2 hanging baskets & one in a half barrel filled with potatoes. If you would like to see a list of tomatoes I am growing this year check out this link .

  1. Do you think we'll actually get a summer? Our heat went on this morning, it was back down to 45F. I have never before had the heat on after May 1. My peppers look worse than when I set them out. Much worse! The tomatoes have finally put on a growth spurt, some growing as much as 21" in two weeks.

  2. Granny - I do hope summer gets here! We have had a couple hot/humid days so far but it is always followed my more cold/wet weather.

  3. Looks good, Dan. Hopefully, warm weather will be here to stay and our gardens will catch up. I am very intrigued with your okra. I assumed we couldn't grow it up north. I hope you prove that wrong.

  4. How does an all female cucumber produce fruit without cross pollination?

  5. Never cease to amaze me all the interesting veggies you grow.. and so well... I have already replaced 4 tomato plants due to the cool damp spring weather we have had..

  6. I am way behind the normal stage of growth for my cucumbers, squash, and melons for this time of year because it has been so cold and because I lost many plants of those items initially and had to reseed. I just hope that the weather moderates soon and they all get a chance to catch up.

Your garden is coming along well despite the cool start to the season.

  7. Blue Lake climbing beans are wonderful. Really prolific!

  8. Dan, did your Giant Belgium start okay? I tried this one for the first time and the seedlings have been struggling and are puny, where most of the other varieties I have were fine and normal.

  9. Finally, here in North Yorkshire we're getting plenty of rain and my veg plot has suddenly started to look like it should do. The weather's warm and the veggies have really had a good soaking. Picked chard and rocket for the first time yesterday. Now, I need to dig out the old cookbook!

  10. Wow, everything looks so small! We've had a succession of hot days in Eastern Kansas. Today is beautifully cool - a perfect day to be outside working in the garden. I'll be planting as soon as I stop writing.

  11. I hope you get some good weather soon. We have had a real mixed bag. Some way over normal when we get the southern weather and some way under normal when we get the cold fronts from Canada. So wild swings have been our weather. But recently it seems to have settled down a bit. Now if we could just get some rain on Thursday I'll be pretty happy.

  12. I live in Utah and my favorite cucumber is the Lemon cucumber. It is kind of round to oval shaped, never bitter. Been growing these for years.
Never heard of a Parthenocarpic cuke. Do you know where I might get some seeds?
