Harvest Monday

Lots of tomatoes for this weeks harvest monday. Definitely to many to eat so I will can some of them for winter. Tomatoes include: Mortgage Lifter, Cherokee Purple, Pink Berkley Tye Dye, Kellogg's Breakfast, Velvet Red, Siletz & Monomakh's Hat. Also in the basket are a few cucumbers & snap beans.

Here is the last weeks dry bean pickings. It seems every week I get a nice bowl of dry beans and they are starting to add up now. Lots of variety in this bowl: Trail of Tears, True Red Cranberry, Vermont Cranberry, Tigers Eye & Boriotto.

To wrap things up here is a photo of the first Kellogg's Breakfast tomato. It is a whopper coming in at 1lb. There are lots more of them on the vine too although not as big as this one. This one will be sliced up with dinner today. The seed for this tomato was shared Granny.

  2. What a gorgeous basket, and the tomatoes are jewels! I love that photo of the dried beans, very pretty. How many dried beans have you harvested in all?

  3. That basket of tomatoes looks delicious! How did the Kellog's Breakfast tomato taste? I have never grown anything but red, pink, or dark (brown) red tomatoes. Only green I have had is green shouldered varieties and no yellow tomatoes either. Just curious what the taste is like on the yellow tomato.

  4. That is a nice looking bowl of beans! Will you end up separating them all by variety before you use them? Or do they have similar flavor/textures where it wouldn't necessarily matter?

I am planning on growing dried beans next year, so I am trying to decide on what varieties to grow. :)

  5. Oh gosh, I don't know how you get your tomatoes to look that beautiful...they looked like they were polished. Heh. Very nice as usual, Dan.

  6. My Kellogg's Breakfast hasn't yet given me a ripe tomato. I took out the plants on each side of it last week, now I can at least find it. It looks as though a couple of them are finally coloring, now that they have some breathing room.

  9. That Kellogg's breakfast looks gorgeous.

I'm the only person I know who grows Cherokee Trail of Tears to eat as a fresh bean! I think it's lovely.

  13. Lovely tomatoes and beans. I too am curious about the taste of the kellog's breakfast. I had a yellow tomato today of unknown variety but the flavor was just so-so. So I'm on the look out for a good tasting one.

  15. Finally your patience pays off and now you have tons of tomatoes! They are really gorgeous tomatoes. I'm totally coveting that Kellogg's Breakfast tomato. Please do a tasting comparison of all your different tomatoes!

Do you usually save seeds from all your heirloom tomatoes? Since I only grew a hybrid Early Girl this year, I did not try my hand at tomato seed saving. But I have seen your post on tomato seed saving, and will definitely try it out next year.

  20. I'm curious about that Kellogg's Breakfast also, does it have any acidity? I don't like a lot of yellow tomatoes because they aren't tangy enough for me. And I'm still full of admiration for those beautiful beans.
