Scotts EcoSense Weed B Gon

Last week I was contact by Scotts about their new product, EcoSense Weed B Gon. They sent me a sample that I will try out and post about the results. It controls broad leaf weeds without harming your lawn and is derived from natural ingredients. Being natural it is safe for people and pets. With the pesticide ban a few years back I was pleased to hear a product is now available to replace the old chemical alternative.

In a nut shell it is an iron solution. When sprayed on the weed it is adsorbed into the plant, oxidation then occurs inside the plant and the cell walls are destroyed. The grass on the other hand has thin leaves that don't absorb much iron and are not affected. It is said visible results occur within a few hours and the weed dies within a few days.

I will be testing this on a few weeds in the lawn, most notably dandelions, chickweed & common plantain. It is suppose to rain today so I will try it out on Friday. Look for a post on the results in a few days.

  1. I will be interested to see what you think of this product I was planning on picking it up.

  2. I haven't heard of it. That might be because it's not avilable here. Then again, it might be because I dug all my lawn up years ago for veg beds so I never notice lawn products.
I'll be looking out for your verdict.

  3. I would be really sad without my dandelions and clover in my lawn. I know I'm strange that way, but I like a mixed lawn. The funny thing is that my friend that is moving with us to the new house was wondering if we could plant dandelions because she loves them too. I had to laugh at her since you don't have to plant them. Wait and they will come.

  4. Good to see they are moving into product lines that are more environmentally friendly. The spray gun applicator would be good for getting broadleaf weeds in the lawn on a spot basis. This reminds me that I need to pick up some organic lawn fertilizer this weekend, I am seriously late with the spring application of fertilizer.

  5. Hope it works and is less toxic than the regular stuff (although I'd investigate a little more before believing what the company says). It will be interesting to see how it works for you. Hopefully it really is a little better for the natural world (although I'm sure it's still not great for the wallet).

I'd still be wary of letting kids/pets play after applying this stuff. Even "natural" can be bad (after all cocaine & heroin are "natural" products). And they found out that it's the inert ingredients in roundup that cause reproductive disorders.

I've considered buying a cinnamon weed killer from a local organic supply place, but haven't decided if I want to or not. I'm trying to make peace with the weeds, realizing they're like bag bugs, most are beneficial in that they feed the good bugs/birds.

I'm like Daphne, I love the wild violets in my lawn and the clover as well so I won't spray them. I use plantain all the time on cuts & scrapes. I actually just dug up a few plants to give to friends who wanted them to grow for medicinal purposes and had sprayed them all out years ago.

  6. I'm also interested to hear how this works. We inherited a bindweed problem with our house and I would prefer a less toxic way to get rid of it.

  7. It's so great that most companies are finally seeing the light (so to speak) about green chemicals for our lawns and gardens. I'm a weed puller myself, but so many people ask me what they can spray on their weeds, and honestly these days I haven't a clue whats truly safe or not. I look forward to hearing how your testing turns out.

  8. I have to agree with CR. It seems companies are using (and abusing) terms like 'natural' just to be in fashion. Still, will be interesting to see how it works.

  9. Although they call this an "eco friendly" product, I have heard that the so called preservatives kill plankton and phytoplankton. Unfortunately if this product is used the runoff could have effects on our oceans.

  11. After 5 days this product really works. I have posted before and after pictures over a 5 day period here if others are interested:

    EcoSense Weed B Gon Review

I noticed that the grass around the weed goes a very dark green but returns to a 'normal' green shade after I've mowed the lawn.

I hope this helps. It is a great product.
