Garden Visitors

Now that the weather has turned cold I have started to put out the feeders. I hung the feeder with black oil sunflower seeds which quickly attracted visitors. I also put out the Log Suet Feeder but the only thing that attracted was squirrels that ate the wood too. I will wait a little longer to put out suet until the squirrels are hibernating more. Below are some photos I have taken over the last couple weeks. All were take from the living room, either on the couch or by the window. Got to love lazy photography!

Sparrow, male & female House Finch, Chickadee

  1. That's something I need to do, also. However, the squirrels would have a field day with them. Still, it's neat to look out the window and see various birds each day.

  2. You have so many different birds in your garden. I get sparrows, woodpeckers and some blue and yellow small bird that I don’t know what it is.
    Lovely photos.

  3. Fantastic colors on those birds. To echo EG, whatever birds we have don't get a chance to stay in one place for long because of the squirrels.

  4. As you once told me, nice bokeh !
Great inside shots ! Your lens model please ?

The pics are all stunning. The first two look like garden ornaments ! (First glance got me thinking stuffed bird sculpture). Handsome feeder. Love woodpecker #1.

  5. I love the birdfeeder this time of year. It's so nice to look and try to identify all the birds. Since we're surrounded by woods we have 3 different kinds of woodpeckers that come to our feeder.

I've taken a few photos, I need to take some more. It's quite lovely now that there's snow on the ground

  6. EG - They are nice to watch,it beats the crap on the tube.

vrtlarica - We do get a nice mix of birds. The long hedge, trees in the back & river close by attract lots.

Ribbit - Got to love squirrels, I wish I could shoot them!

Miss M - These were taken with a Nikkor 70-300mm VR f/4.5-5.6. It's the best value lens for its length. Works well most of the time but it is a little slow.

Chiot's Run - We get lots of woodpeckers too, downy, hairy, red bellied. They are fun to watch, very chatty birds.

  7. Some great bird photos there! I love watching the birds play in the plants on the balcony garden. Ok so we only really get sparrows but they play the most manic games of hide and seek and chasey in the plants!

  8. OH WOW! Great pics, Dan. Such diversity in your yard. Makes me think that I should pay much more attention to the birds in my yard.

  9. Feeding birds (and squirrels) is really enjoyable. The hours of enjoyment from watching them more than repays the trouble and expense. We get Pileated woodpeckers that are huge and have the red top like woody woodpecker. They can really get to hammering on the trees at times and are amusing to watch.

Great pics (as usual!). I am trying to get a picture of my latest garden visitor. I know what it is now (caught him/her last night) but would like to get a picture of the creature just for fun.

  10. Wonderful pics! you share some common species that must fly across the atlantic...except the cardinal! that is spectacular and we don't have them here. If you like garden bird watching follow the link to 'Midmarsh' on my blog.

  12. Absolutely lovely photos, Dan! I love watching the birds outside our windows too. You seem to have such a diverse variety. I think our blue jays scare off some smaller birds.

  13. Great photos! Those birds have adapted to an amazing range of climates, I see all of them except for the Cardinals here on the central coast of California. Which reminds me, I need to go refill the hummer feeders...

  14. I was trying to do some armchair photography the other day of some birds, but I just couldn't get them in focus. If only they would sit still for me. A bird feeder must really be useful for that.

  15. I saw this really cute looking bird and I didn't have my camera on me. I stomped and kicked the ground yelling "damnit!" as it flew away. Wonderful photos!
